The Southern Gardener And Receipt Book
by Phineas Thornton
This important gardening book and cookbook was first self-published in 1839. The author, Phineas Thornton of Camden, South Carolina, was a shopkeeper and postmaster. Because he sold gardening supplies and was the center of all communication in the fast-growing small town, he was able to write down the recipes, cures, and advice used and needed by the rural Southerner of the day. The Southern Gardener and Receipt Book, of course, contains directions for gardening, along with a collection of valuable recipes, instructions for the preservation of fruits, and formulas for curing diseases. Not until long after the Civil War did other gardening, cooking, and advice books come along to supersede this Southern classic. 2006 (2nd edition); Softcover; 408 pages. 37249 |
