This heart-shaped inkstand, with inkwell and sander, is a faithful reproduction of one that was made and initialed by John Holland (1781-1843), Salem's third master potter.

Though shapes vary, the heart shape is common in Europe and America, as is the glaze and design.

The "MF" inscribed on the bottom of the inkstand is the mark of Michael Fox, potter at Old Salem Museums & Gardens.

The original Holland inkstand is in the Old Salem Museums & Gardens collections.
