Rudolph Christ Sugar Jar, Small

In 1766, Rudolph Christ (1750-1833) was apprenticed to Gottfried Aust, master of the first Moravian pottery in North Carolina. Christ became Salem's master potter in 1789 after Aust's death.

With sugar having a highly prized status within a household, the vessel chosen to hold it needed to be both practical and decorative. This sugar jar displays a geometric motif. Many slip-decorated works attributed to Christ bear designs of this nature.

This is a faithful reproduction of Christ's original sugar jar, which is in the Old Salem Museums & Gardens collections. The jar measures 11" high x 7" wide. Made in North Carolina.
