Rudolph Christ Plate

In 1766, Rudolph Christ (1750-1833) was apprenticed to Gottfried Aust, master of the first Moravian pottery in North Carolina. Christ became Salem's master potter in 1789 after Aust's death.

This lively slip-decorated plate features techniques and motifs associated with Christ and other Wachovia potters, including "seed pod" decoration, the fan, the fylfot, and stylized foliage with fan-like delineated leaves.

This reproduction plate is faithful to the original, which is in the Old Salem Museums & Gardens collections and it measures 12" in diameter.
