Rudolph Christ Sugar Jar, Large
In 1766, Rudolph Christ (1750-1833) was apprenticed to Gottfried Aust, master of the first Moravian pottery in North Carolina. Christ became Salem's master potter in 1789 after Aust's death.
With sugar having a highly prized status within a household, the vessel chosen to hold it needed to be both practical and decorative. This sugar jar displays a fylffot motif. The fylfot is a symbol associated with German American decorative arts but is not confined to that culture. Christ's creative use of this symbol incorporates the head of a bird at the terminal of each lobe.
This is a faithful reproduction of Christ's original sugar jar, which is in the Old Salem Museums & Gardens collections.
The jar measures 12" high x 9" wide.
